The Caveman Diet Food: What every Athlete Needs

Vougetlin, a gastroenterologist made the paleo diet popular in the mid 1970’s and ever since then has been adapted and promoted by many researchers and authors in several academic journals and books.    Phase 1: Eating Before the Exercises: Athletes should eat moderate to low “glycemic index carbohydrates” some hours before tiring workouts or long distance race. Protein and fat can be consumed in this meal. The food should have low fiber content. After this, take in 200 – 300 calories every hour until the exercises start. 

   Phase 2: Eating During Exercising: If you are engaging yourself in long runs or tough workouts, you need to take in high energy foods in fluid form. Sport drinks will do the trick. However, if the whole exercise will last less than an hour, water is enough for you. A good starting point at this stage would be 200 to 400 calories per hour. 

   Phase 3: Eating Instantly After: After exercising, the first 30 minutes are vital for recovery. Prioritize more at this time as you finalize your physical activity. A carbohydrate and protein in a 4-5:1 ratio is highly recommended (3- 5 tablespoons of glucose, 16 ounces of fruit juice with a banana, 2 pinches of salt and 3 tablespoons of protein powder would be ideal.)

   Phase 4: Eating For Extended Recovery: For the next few hours focus more on carbohydrates. At such stages, you can eat non optimal foods such as bread, pasta, corn, bagel, corn and any other type of food that have high content in glucose. A good choice in the carbohydrate recovery category would be sweet potatoes, Raisins and yams.

   Phase 5: Eating For Long Term: At this stage, you need to start focusing on the paleo diet to cover up for the rest of the day.
